Options for Replacing Missing Teeth

Options for Replacing Missing Teeth

If you have missing teeth, it is very important to replace them to maintain good oral health. Our Calgary dentists can offer you a range of options to replace your missing teeth, and together, you'll choose one that's right for you.

Do I really need to replace my missing teeth?

Left untreated, missing teeth can lead to a variety of oral health issues. The remaining teeth can shift out of their proper positions, which can result in discomfort, trouble chewing, wear and tear, and bite misalignment.

The jaw bone in the area where the teeth are missing may also begin to deteriorate, eventually leading to a condition called facial collapse.

Replacement Options for Missing Teeth

When you visit our Calgary dental office, your dentist will review the following tooth replacement options with you, and help you choose the one that aligns with your needs and budget.

Dentures

Dentures are removable tooth replacements. They can take some time to get used to, and they will never feel exactly like your natural teeth. However, modern dentures are very natural looking, comfortable, and highly functional, and they are the least costly option for replacing missing teeth.

There are two types of dentures that you can get, depending on your needs. Full dentures replace all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Partial dentures can replace one missing tooth or a few in a row. You dentures will be custom made for you based on impressions made of your mouth.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is fixed tooth replacement that is anchored to teeth or dental implants adjacent to the gap. Dental bridges are not removable, making for a secure, comfortable fit. Once placed, your dental bridge will last many years before needing to be replaced.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are tiny titanium posts that act as artificial tooth roots, and are implanted into the jawbone. A dental crown is placed on top to finish the tooth.

The dental implant and crown combination looks, feels and functions almost exactly a like a natural tooth does. While implants are more expensive and invasive than crowns or bridges, their natural look and feel is worth it for many people.
