4 Ways to Care for Your Teeth

4 Ways to Care for Your Teeth

Caring for your teeth and gums is an important part of maintaining your overall health and well-being. Here are 4 things you can do to care for your teeth and keep your oral health on track.

At Deer Valley Dental Care, we have many patients asking us for tips on how they can better care for their teeth and gums, so we thought we'd share some of our advice with our readers.

Here are a few tips for taking care of your smile;

1. Brush your teeth twice a day

Brushing your teeth twice a day is a habit that most people already have grown accustomed to. We tell our Calgary patients with children, to make toothbrush time a fun activity and brush alongside their kids! Brush your teeth and gums thoroughly, with the head of the brush angled up into your gums. The recommended time to brush your teeth is two minutes, so throw on a fun song to make sure your timing is sufficient.

2. Floss daily

This tip may receive a collective groan from our readers! We hear from our Calgary patients that flossing is something that they often overlook. It's said it takes three weeks to develop a habit, so start flossing today to make it a part of your day-to-day! Place the floss between your two fingers, and slide it between two teeth. Gently pull the strand of floss back and forth, and also on an angle to ensure you get both sides of the tooth. Flossing may hurt at first, but once you start you'll find it to be just another part of your before-bed routine.

3. Replace your toothbrush regularly

It is recommended to change your toothbrush at least once every six months. Some of our Calgary patients decide it's time to change their toothbrushes when they notice the bristles become stiff, or if they have recently fought off a bout of illness such as a cough, cold or flu. The next time you're at our office, ask us what kind of toothbrush is best for you!

4. Visit the dentist twice a year

At Deer Valley Dental Care, we recommend all of our Calgary patients are seen for oral hygiene and cleaning appointments twice a year, every six months. We will be able to provide a professional cleaning, analyze the status of your oral health, and answer any questions you may have - or let you know if there are any issues with your dental health that have arisen since your last visit.
